Practical Planting Considerations for New Jersey Landscapes

Climate: New Jersey experiences all four seasons, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Selecting plants that can handle both ends of the spectrum—especially the freeze-thaw cycles of Zones 6a to 7a—is essential for long-term success. At JB’s Landscaping, we help you choose plant varieties that thrive in our local conditions and deliver year-round interest.

Soil Conditions: From dense clay in parts of Morris County to sandy loam in areas of Warren County, New Jersey’s soil types vary significantly by location. The health and texture of your soil directly impact plant performance. While soil amendments can improve conditions, major corrections like adding topsoil or improving drainage can affect the overall project cost—so we always assess and design with your specific site in mind.

Sunlight Exposure: Every plant has its preferences—some require full sun, others do best in partial shade. We evaluate how sunlight moves across your property to ensure each tree, shrub, or perennial is placed in the ideal microclimate. This ensures better growth, lower maintenance, and a healthier, longer-lasting landscape.

Water Requirements: New Jersey’s rainfall averages over 45 inches per year, but summer droughts and poorly draining soils can create challenges. At JB’s Landscaping, we help you select plants that are well-matched to your site’s natural moisture levels. For homeowners without irrigation systems, we focus on drought-tolerant or deep-rooting varieties to ensure lasting success. Some local nurseries even require irrigation for plant warranties—something we always factor into our recommendations.

Pest & Disease Resistance: Our region is home to common threats like deer, Japanese beetles, and fungal diseases that can impact landscape plantings. We carefully select trees, shrubs, and perennials that are known for their resilience against local pests and diseases, reducing the need for chemicals and future replacements.

Mature Size & Long-Term Growth: It’s easy to fall in love with a plant at the nursery—but if it’s too large for your space in a few years, it can quickly become a problem. We take mature size and growth habits into account from the beginning, ensuring each plant has the room it needs to flourish without overcrowding your beds or structures. Smart spacing leads to healthier plants, less pruning, and better long-term results.

At JB's Landscaping we take all of these into consideration when coming up with a planting scheme for your landscape.  We will only choose and plant species that are well-suited to the specific conditions in our growing zone in Morris, Sussex and Warren Counties.

We stick with native plants wherever possible and non-native plants that are best suited for our growing zones 5b, 6a, and 6b.

We have been so lucky to have JBs take care of our seasonal landscaping/hardscaping needs and also snow plowing/salting for both our family home and our business properties. They have been reliable and reasonable over the years. Jeff has gone out of his way to accommodate our requests and Angela is a pleasure to work with.

We have been customers since 2012! Every year we start off the season with a Spring Clean up in our gardens and lawn followed by a lawn fertilization. Then our weekly lawn cuttings go from mid April to late October early November. The maintenance team does a thorough job leaving our lawn looking neat and nicely manicured. The office staff is attentive and makes sure to satisfy our special requests. Kudos to JB’s, you will look forward to seeing their truck pull up to your property every week! LO (Blairstown)
