Paver Patio Installation and Construction
Our Proven Process for Long-Lasting Paver Installations
When it comes to building beautiful, durable patios, walkways, and driveways, site preparation is everything. At JB’s Landscaping, we install every project according to the exact specifications outlined by leading manufacturers like Techo-Bloc and Cambridge Pavingstones.
Here in New Jersey, soils can vary widely—from sandy loam to heavy clay—and poor drainage or freeze-thaw cycles can quickly ruin a paver installation if it's not properly prepared. That’s why we never cut corners. Whether we’re building a paver patio for relaxing or a driveway that needs to withstand the additional weight of vehicles, we engineer each base to perform for years to come.
We also use Gator Base by Alliance on select projects where appropriate. This high-density polypropylene panel replaces several inches of traditional compacted aggregate, speeding up installation while providing excellent load transfer, freeze/thaw resistance, and drainage. It's ideal for pedestrian applications like patios and walkways, especially in areas where excavation depth is limited or drainage is a concern.
How We Prepare the Ground for Your Pavers
1. Site Layout & Marking
We start by marking your project area with precision, using stakes, string lines, and spray paint to outline the shape and layout of your patio, walkway, or driveway.
2. Excavation
We remove any grass, topsoil, debris, and unsuitable subsoil to reach the correct depth—factoring in the paver thickness, bedding layer, and a compacted base that’s appropriate for your project and soil conditions.
3. Base Installation
We build a compacted base using high-quality crushed stone, carefully graded and compacted in layers. For patios and walkways, we may also use Gator Base where it adds value and performance. Every base is tailored to site-specific needs, ensuring proper support and drainage.
4. Edge Restraints
We install durable edge restraints around the perimeter to lock the pavers in place and prevent shifting over time.
5. Bedding Layer
We apply a thin layer of bedding sand or Gator Fabric depending on the base system, screeding it to a precise level that allows us to set the pavers uniformly.
6. Laying the Pavers
We lay the pavers in your chosen pattern, using manufacturer-recommended techniques to ensure tight spacing and level alignment. We use a rubber mallet and plate compactor to seat them properly without damage.
7. Joint Stabilization
Finally, we sweep in Alliance Gator polymeric sand to lock the pavers in place, prevent weed growth, and protect against washout. A final compaction ensures everything is solid and secure.
Why Our Installations Outperform the Rest
Our attention to detail, certified training, and use of advanced materials like Techo-Bloc, Cambridge, Alliance Gator Base, and polymeric sands result in installations that not only look stunning—but are built to handle New Jersey’s freeze-thaw cycles, drainage challenges, and heavy use. We don’t just meet the minimum—we exceed it, so your investment lasts for decades.
